"You can do it" or The power of
MOtivation
If you have ever been paddling a kayak that behaves like a bath tub and have a chance to see passing with ease one of these beautiful wooden boats, you will need nothing more. That is all the motivation you will need!
As a trained mechanic and mechanical engineer, I have a good understanding of technical drawings and processes, however, no special skills in woodworking. A average skilled home worker, I am convinced, can do what I did just using the step by step instructions as Nick Schade provides them in his book. Depending on your skill level it may take you a little longer, that's all.
The Book:
The Strip-Built Sea Kayak
Three Rugged, Beautiful Boats You Can Build
By Nick Schade
It provides a well documented, yet due to its age, partly outdated instructions as far as products used are concerned, to building these boats. The techniques and tools as well as the main materials of construction, such as wood, glass cloth and epoxy resin are as current as can be.
how it came about
I have to admit, this Guillemot kayak is not the first boat I have built. Two years before this one I have started by building a classic Canoe, also according to a book and also using the strip building technique.
This was a Prospector design from Ted Moores CANOECRAFT.
I was somewhat less courageous at that time, so I bought the drawings from Ted via his distributor in Germany, where I bought the materials from as well.
One thing was clear then and is today. It had to be staple-less. Frankenstein-seams on a beautiful surface like this would have hurt my eye an my pride!
Highly pleased with the result, I decided to go after a more challenging project. Moreover a summer long use on several lakes in northern Italy and in Mecklenburg Germany had me infected with the virus of paddling. However, more than once, even with two paddlers, I was hardly able to manouver the boat in strong winds. The high profile provided just to much of a surface. At the same time I realized that kayaks nearby hat much less trouble fighting the weather.
A sea kayak of arctic design seemed to be just the challenge I was after. In search of an eye pleasing, elegant design I came across Nick Schades book among others. Careful analysis made me decide on this book as seemingly the most complete.
